As someone who has implemented many ideas. I can say that this is true. The only ideas I successfully monetized so far were the ones that involved no innovation at all, just 100% social factors and based on other people's existing working product.

If you come up with your own idea and build it out, it's going to be a tough sell. For starters, if your idea is innovative in a subtle but critical way, you may struggle to find a common vocabulary to communicate it to your prospective customer. It's difficult to prove that your product is better than existing products to someone who does not yet know it. Sometimes the benefit might be that your product speeds up your customer's workflow by a factor of 3 over a 6 months period... But they won't have proof of it until they've tried it for 1 whole month... Difficult sell.

Your product could have the potential to save a company $100k per year in development and hosting costs and yet it may be impossible to convince them to hand you over $1k per year.
