I disagree that ad hominem attacks are ever justified, even against dimwits. The ad hominem attack is the dimwits' favourite weapon - It's better not to risk being associated with them. Also, what if the majority of the audience are also dimwits? It will work against you... In these cases, it's better to just not answer or answer with a joke that they won't understand.
