> Now it’s driven by fear.

This makes a lot of sense. We have a debt-based economy and the collective debt keeps getting bigger. This creates more pressure on people.

It used to be that people would work hard and save up to improve their lifestyles. Now people mostly work hard to avoid losing their existing lifestyles (E.g. avoid bankruptcy). The motivation is very different; it's based on fear; it's no longer about hope or greed.
