There is a reason why people are becoming maniacs. The social and economic system is fundamentally flawed and unjust. Many people are waking up and realizing the systemic causes of their problems; e.g. monetary system artificially propping up certain financial assets and creating an anti-competitive environment, corporate lobbying, foreign government interference causing international crises to sell weapons and saddle foreign nations with frivolous debt, etc... Lots of problems which are completely unattended by governments. Of course people will become increasingly maniacal over time.
