You can't do nothing and then complain about your skills not being valued. How can people assess your skills if there is nothing for them to use to assess you?

That said, don't be surprised if you do things and your skills are still not being valued. You can do great things and nobody will care. It happens. Maybe you're doing things in a slightly sub-optimal way or maybe they just don't understand what you're doing or maybe people just don't like you... The real world is messy and chaotic; nothing is guaranteed. The role of luck cannot be understated; there is luck involved at every level.
